When I grow up I think I can be a great police officer. I understand that to be a police officer I must finish school first. I have to stay out of trouble, be respectful and be willing to risk my life for the safety of others by fighting crime. I’m going to work on being a police man before I get out of school starting today. I’m going to do what I’m told by my teachers and parents. If I listen to my parents and teachers I will become a great son and student with God’s help. I feel like that’s the starting point for me. I’m going to work hard in and out of school to be a police officer.

When I was two I was with my daddy at the Noble Park pool.  I kept drowning because I kept panicking. I was underwater with my mouth open.  I was blowing bubbles out of my nose. I came out of the water I went back under. My arms and legs were kicking when my daddy came in after me.

JaCoyce
I get nervous when people
come to see us practice
in the gym, waiting on us.
I get really scared,
especially when I get the
ball. My face is sweating
I’m running. I think
they’re talking about me. I
lose my concentration now.
I stop with the ball in
my hand. In my head I say
I think I can…I think I can…
Sometimes I miss the shot or
free throw but the good
thing is that sometimes
I make it! Lay-ups,
three pointers.
I hear lots of screaming and
yelling. I bend my knees a little,
I’m shaking. I’m scared to even
shoot. I’m still sweating.
I tuck my lips under then I start
to dribble. At that moment
I throw the ball up and it flies
in the air like a bird, wings flapping
in the air super fast. I’m still
nervous until it’s all net! I’m over
my fears in BASKETBALL!

Dontashia
I think I can play the basketball game this Saturday. I am going to try my best as hard as I can. I may be the smallest one on the team but when I make a basket I am so glad. I am getting better every day. I hope to grow to be a CHAMPION one day. It may take practice but I am going to practice in the spring, fall, and the summer with my brothers and sisters. I will get better every time I try. I know I am good now a little. I think I really can be a good basketball player.

I stand there with my arms bent, looking at the goal. My face starts to get still. My legs bend too.  I always need to get ready for when I get the ball. I need to work on being with a team.

I can
become a NBA
player. I can shoot
 great. I’m good at
free throws, too. I
 steal the ball and
                                     I like to pass
                                     the ball. I like to
                                     play with my team.

When I imagine it,
I hear people cheering
for me. I am twenty-one
years old and so happy.
My coach tells me to shoot.
I go to the goal, scared
the ball isn’t going in,
but it does. Everybody
starts cheering. My mouth is
wide open as we win the
championship, so excited!
Going home with a trophy
with my name on it. I think
I can become a NBA player.

One day when I was 7 or 8 I saw my friend do a back flip. I thought that was cool so I tried to do a back flip. I did not do it well, but I started practicing a lot. I could only do it in one spot and with my hands. Then I started doing it with a cartwheel, but I could only do that with hands.

One day I was running as fast as I could and I did a back flip without any hands. It didn’t feel right at first, but I started practicing a back flip without any hands. I got the hang of it and I started doing a back flip without any hands in the street. Then I started making different kinds of back flips. It really is fun doing back flips. One day I want to be famous for doing flips!

Jarrell
When I first tried to ride my bike I was six years old. It was at my grandparents’ house. I had a Power Rangers bike. I got on my bike. My face and hands were pouring with sweat. I started to go. I was going fast. Boom! My arm smacked on the concrete. It felt like somebody ripped my arm off.

Can you believe it? I tried it again and of course, I almost fell. I stopped myself from falling with my foot. I tried again and finally learned how to ride my bike. I was so proud of myself. I felt just like I won a championship!

Akish
One time I was outside. I went to go and see if my friends could come outside. They got their shoes on and came outside. We went over to my house and sat on my porch. One of my friends asked if I could flip off the porch. I said NO then they showed me. They told me to do it. I got so scared but I was saying I think I can and I did it! I was happy because I never did it before!

Becoming a volley ball player is probably hard. Most of it seems hard because my cousin was a volley ball player. Sometimes we would meet each other over at my granny’s house and she would bring her volleyball. I never thought I   could do it all by myself. She taught me how to throw the ball up from your hand. In volleyball I set my hands and jump to throw the ball. That’s why I want to play volleyball.

Sherie
When I learned how to do the monkey bars I was at McNabb’s playground. My best friend and next-door neighbor, Alexis Daniels was there helping me to do the monkey bars and face my fears.

I climbed up the ladder leaning forward to grab the first bar. My hands were slick. I felt like I was going to fall but I hung onto the first bar until I had enough courage to take one of my hands off. I kept saying in my mind not to look down and that I believe in myself. I know I can do it. I reached and grabbed onto the next bar.  I kept doing that until I got to the end.  When I got to the end and I got off the monkey bars I was very proud of myself.

In 3rd grade I was afraid of doing the monkey bars but then my best friend Alexis helped me face my fears and do the monkey bars. Now I like doing the monkey bars.

Sierra
I think I can be a good girl. I think I can be in class all the time.  I hate when Ms. Robinson is mad at us. When she is mad at us, it makes me feel bad. I love Mrs. Robinson so much that she could be my mom. I love Ms. Robinson so much that I could die for her. I think I could do my homework by myself. Even when I try not to get a referral it doesn’t always work. My mommy is mad at me when I get a referral. I think I can do better if I try very, very hard.

Martiaj
On Christmas Day I went to my aunt’s house in Cairo, Illinois. She gave me a present that I had been wanting.

It was an earring gun. I had noticed it every time we went to Wal-Mart, but my mom would tell me just wait!

I held the earring gun and I was nervous.  I started shaking. My mom said it’s going to be alright as I watched my sister getting her second hole.

My sister told me it didn’t hurt, but I didn’t believe her. I just waited……and waited……………until I heard my aunt call my name, Martaj. My heart started pounding.

I walked in, she told me to sit down. My hand and my forehead were sweating. I was grinding my teeth together like there was 100 pounds of weight on my teeth. She was ready, then SNAP! That didn’t hurt at all. Now I’m relieved. I’m going to show all of my friends

I think I can become a DANCER because every time my family school or family has a dance me and my crew are there. My crew members are Nia, Hope, Akish, Sierra, Tatyana, and Dontashia. I teach my crew new dances every time I get a chance.

One dance is called the HIP HOP SALSA. First you have to move your hips to the front then the back. That is one of our dances. Some dances are Michael Jackson’s dances and some we just make up. (Michael Jackson was my inspiration!) We perform at dances. When we perform we always have a smile on our faces. Sometime we do fast and slow dances.

I teach smaller kids to dance also. It takes a lot of hard work, determination, and sacrifice. But you have to believe practice makes PERFECT!

Tatyana
Sometimes when I can’t
do something
I say I think I can.
My granny used to say
(and she stills does today)
She say’s come on
you can do it
just believe in yourself.
Just always know that
you got God on your side!

Tyreck
                                                                                                                                                               I  I can be a football player
that’s what I have been dreaming all my life.
Sometimes I play with my dad. He teaches me
about hand control so you won’t drop the ball
as somebody hikes it to you. He teaches me to
throw the ball. I want to be a football player.
I will be in the NFL. I want to be a HB in the NFL.

Jordan

I tried to do a back flip once when I was six years old. It was over at my daddy’s house in his front yard. It was sunny outside. The sun was out and the wind was blowing in my face. Every time I tried I fell. I tried again and again until I sprained my ankle.

I couldn’t do a back flip for two weeks until one afternoon I went outside with my brother and tried my best. I kept trying and kept falling until I took off running and tilted back and landed on my feet. I did it! I knew I could all along! That’s how I learned how to do a back flip!

That night was Halloween.
And that night, I don’t know about.

That house was a haunted house.
I went to that haunted house and
there was the spookiest thing there.
The door opened. I looked inside.
It was a goose.
Then the bad news happened.

Spooky Poem by Martiaj
My name is Wanchenname.
I looked up
and there it was –
the haunted house.
I walked in
and it grabbed
my hand and my
hand tore off.
I kept going.
I slowly walked around
There was a man
laughing. The doors
slammed shut.
The man started
chasing me.
That’s when
I lost it.....
What happened?
It was all a dream.
Woah! A scary one
at that!

for help.

Blood was dripping
from her hand. Then
she found her way out.
Finally she was happy.

Suddenly the man jumped
out the window and
broke his leg.

Story by Jarrell
A girl just came to a new town. One day she saw a shadow. She ran and then she saw a monster. She was excited but then she saw it. She ran like a race car to her house. The monster came through the window. He walked upstairs. The stairs started to crack because the man was 10 feet and 633 pounds. When he opened the door, the girl dashed right down the stairs. Boom! She went through the window. Crack! She got caught on it. Blood was dripping down her head. The monster man came to pick her up. The police came and the monster passed out. The girl went to the hospital.

 Spooky House by Sherie
On Halloween night I went trick or treating with my sister. That night we saw a house on top of a hill. It looked spooky but I was curious. What was inside that spooky house? So we climbed up the hill and went into the spooky house. All the lights were off.  We heard a strange sound. It sounded like someone stepping upstairs. We looked all over the spooky house to see if we could find some stairs. We finally found some stairs and went up them. We found a bag of gold, jewelry and silver. Then I thought for a minute about why gold, jewelry and sliver would be in a spooky house like this. Someone might have robbed a store! I should call the police with my cell phone when we get home. I wish I had it with me!  We hurried home and called the police. A whole lot of police went to the spooky house and found the bag of gold, jewelry and silver. They also found the robber upstairs and arrested him.

She was so scared until she realized it was her dad! He helped her out. Then she continued going to get something to eat.
