The Little League Rodeo Champ by Ariana
I was 7. A bucking pony was waiting for
me inside its stable.
I was scared out of my wits! “I think I
can! I think I can!” I mumbled to myself,
walking over to where the small but fierce
pony was waiting. More & more scared & tense,
I hopped onto
the bucking pony.

They opened the gate & we were
off! “EEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKK!”
I shrieked. All I could hear were
the snorts of the pony & the people
yelling. I finally just jumped off. Everything
went silent. I looked up at the score board.
My jaw dropped. I’d beaten the record for
the kids and adults! The stands erupted into
whistles, applause, and yells. My pony had calmed
down & was nuzzling me gently. The record was 1
minute, 20 seconds. It was then 2 minutes, 58 seconds.
I got to keep the pony on our
farm and got a shiny trophy, too!
It was the best day ever!!

Dunking Fever by Chris
Once I was playing basketball
trying to dunk, but all I did was
fall. I tried and gave it my all.
Still all I did was get hung
on the rim and fall.
Then sucked it all up,
which smelled like sweat
went through the air to
hear that net go… swish
didn’t make it
I think I can
I jumped off my right foot
I went up into the
air and when I came down I stuck my
arms out
and
WHAM!
I had dunked
I KNEW I COULD!

I think I can
become a track

I Think I can become by:Jeffrey
One day I think I can become a NFL football player. I think I can become an NFL football player because I’m smart, fast, athletic, and fun to play with. I want to become a football player because I really love the sport, and my whole family likes football. It’s been going through my generation for years now and I know I can handle it. The sport might be extremely dangerous but I’m good at it. My dad taught me. By the way I would like to play for the Saints or The Vikings

On Demand Writing is Writing for Real!

Take it From Me!  by Ariana
Have you ever accepted a dare and in the meantime, faced a fear? I know I have! It was scary and fun at the same time. It was a few years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

                                                                                     The Dare
When I was 6 I accepted a dare to jump into the deep part of the pool. For me, the deep part was only 4 feet! As soon as I said those words, I knew I was in trouble. I couldn’t swim! The kids that pushed me toward the pool were 10 and 11. They were 4 and 5 years older than me! They were being so mean. Keep reading to figure out what happens!

Don’t Push Me to Make Me Jump!
4 feet of crystal clear water, surrounded by concrete. It was a hot summer day. Everybody was looking at me. I was sweating bullets. I was scared out of my wits. I knew I shouldn’t have taken the dare, but . . . I did. I knew I’d have to jump sooner or later, so I thought, “LATER!” I tried to turn away and run but the big kids wouldn’t let me.

                                                                                    1-2-3, JUMP!!!
“I, 2, 3!” I screamed, jumping in. I paddled my arms and legs like a dog. I felt myself moving. When I rose to the surface I climbed out of the pool. I went right over to the big kids. They were dumbfounded. I took the $5 they each owed me. I went to tell my mom. It was the best day in my life. I faced a fear and won a dare!

                                                                                     The Review
Well, it turns out that jumping in isn’t so bad. After all, when you splash your friends, it’s AWESOME!! Never be afraid to face your fears. Sometimes when you accept a dare, you face a fear and overcome an obstacle, too.

                                                                                My Angry Experience
Has your anger ever gotten the best of you? You know? A time when you just got so angry you couldn’t take it anymore and you hit somebody? Unfortunately, it happened to me. It was four years ago. Let me tell you about it.

                                                                                 Forgetting Details
Like I told you, this happened four years ago when I was six. My brother and I were outside waiting for my mom on Sunday morning. We were on the porch. It was about 9:00 and mom was getting ready. When she came out the door, Sammy, my brother, was laying on the ground, crying. But wait! I’m getting ahead of myself and forgetting the details. Let me give you the whole story.

                                                                                 Adding in Details
Sammy had been teasing me about my eyesight. I didn’t have glasses but I needed them, and I could barely see. He kept egging me on and on. He just wouldn’t stop. That’s when I lost it and I hit him. Right in the mouth. He fell and started crying.

                                                                            The Punch and Ground
Just then my mom came out of the house and saw Sammy. She practically screamed, “What happened to Sammy?!?!” I told her that I had hit him for teasing me. Then I said three words, “He deserved it.” Before she grounded me (I knew she would) I asked her to let me explain. I told her that he had said I was “blinder than a bat in daytime” and that I was useless and stupid. I explained, “That’s what set me off!” She said she was still going to ground me for a month. Only one thing made me happy and that was that Sammy was forbidden to play outside for 2 weeks.

                                                                                         Review
So that was the time I let my anger get the best of my and I learned my lesson the hard way. Please do me a favor. Don’t ever let your anger get the best of you or like me, you’ll learn your lesson the hard way. Control your anger (and if you have one or more, don’t hit your brother(s) in the mouth!)!

CONGRATULATIONS to MONTEL, 3rd place winner in the Annual NAACP Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest! Way to go, Montel! We are so proud of you!

INJUSTICES IN MY LIFE by MONTEL

One injustice is that the state government is cutting after school programs. For example, at McNabb Elementary we used to have ESS after school.  The state government has said that we don’t need it anymore. If we had this back, children would be able to catch up on homework. It would give more time to help students learn a little more. This would give every one an equal chance. If we had this, I think students would like school little better. This is why we need this. Let me tell you more about another injustice.

Another injustice is that people with insurance don’t have to wait as long as people with the medical cards. People with the medical card don’t get to spend as much time with their doctor. People with insurance don’t have to pay a lot when they get hurt. People without insurance have to pay a lot of money. I bet if the people without insurance could spend as much time with the doctor as the people with insurance, their teeth wouldn’t be falling out. This is another injustice that I think is not fair.

I have another injustice. It is about boys having to tuck in their shirts at school when girls don’t have to. I don’t think this is fair to the boys. I think if we have to tuck in our shirts, the girls do to. Have you ever stopped to ask a boy about tucking in his shirt? Ask us. We will tell you the truth about it. If we have to tuck ours, they should have to tuck their shirts too.

I hope you like the examples I gave you. I worked hard on them. It took me two days to write this. I put a lot of effort in to this writing. I hope you like my writing essay. This is every important to me. I hope I win the writing essay contest. I like writing about important people and ideas. It’s fun.

Mrs. Knox's friends are "WRITE" from the start!

The Pink Car by Ariana Mundy
A pink car,
Shiny as glistening stars.
Thudding out of the garage
like Thumper the rabbit,
thumping a beat on a hollow log.

Racing along a highway,
a two ton truck
fast as lighting
passes by. BOOM! BOOM!
Says the blaring music.
Its trailer going as high as the sky.
Straight along the road,
the driver is staring.

A pink car,
shiny as glistening stars. The driver of the car
eager and excited to get to the mall.
The car warm from being driven
for hours, for miles.

A pink car,
shiny as glistening stars. You’d be able to
spot it from afar
from the shimmering, beautiful, shine
Of the pink car.

Soccer Cleats by Adrian
So much depends
On the soccer cleats
to make you go faster.
Soccer ball-
black, white,
Round as round as the moon
Flies in
The muddy
Air when I kick it with my soccer cleats
To score a goal
On the soccer field.

Goalkeepers fly
To save the ball
Out of bounds on the side
He throws it to me,
a Corner kick side.

The ball flies in
The muddy air,
Header in the goal
And the score is
1 & 2 win

The French win
For today,
versus the USA
and their soccer cleats.

My Pink Jacket by Elycia
So much depends on
my pink jacket;
not thick enough
For when it gets cold.
A silver crown
on the zipper,
A silver crown
on the jacket.
Putting on my
pink jacket
is like a person
putting on a backpack
before they go to school.

So much depends on
my pink jacket;
Thin made out of white cotton,
Smooth, soft no fur,
Looks stretchable,
clean, light pink,
And has two pockets,
Perfect for the fall!

 The Yellow House by Elycia
I am a yellow house
Watching everything fall;
Hoping it doesn’t
fall on me.

The trees
are glamorous,
shiny,
and beautiful.

I think
they are cold just
like me.
They shiver and then
I see a tree
bend, break and fall
on me.

BOOM! BAM! by Jerran
The only sounds were
BOOM! BAM!
all through the night.
Blue sparks appeared
in the sky. The
house turned blue
for a moment,
then it got quiet.
Suddenly BOOM! BAM!
again went the transformers.

I listened to hear
what would happen next.
From BOOM! BAM! To
crick crackle.
Trees bowing under the ice
then BAM! a tree limb fell.
An hour later
BAM! NO POWER!!!!!

Guardian Helmet by Chris
So much depends
upon your
helmet-
The broad fake metal
covering your
head, bending,
aiming for chest,
tackling like rams;
Hitting each other to make a fumble.

So much depends
upon your
helmet-
swishy muffled
sound pads
squeezing against
your head
making you feel
like your head
is being

imploded .
Boom!

So much depends
upon your
helmet-
the protector
of my
brain: the glob of organ
that keeps
me going,
tackled on the fake grass

softer than regular,
rolling over the ground;
without my helmet I could have a concussion.

That’s why
so much depends upon a helmet.

Walking in Wal- Mart by Tashana
First thing you will hear
Is welcome to Wal –Mart
Or may I help you

You will hear a forklift
With boxes and crates

When you get to the register
You see numbers and buttons
You hear cars outside making
Like firecracker noise and with
Popping and bumping sounds

The Brown Fat Cat by Alliyah
Warm sunny day
Feeling hot on my skin,
Brown fat cat sitting on the porch
Meowing in pain
Because I accidentally hit it
With That Tall Cat.

Feeling sad and scared
It quickly jumps on me,
Scratches my face.
It begins to bleed. Brown fat cat hissing at me,
It runs away.
Crying in pain I run in the
Opposite direction.

STORM by Matthew
There were trees falling from
their roots
and they destroyed
Houses and garages
and killed
More than 20 people.
It was also
A national disaster
and it was not f
un at all.
We should always be p
repared,
especially if your house

Is damaged already. Remember to
Be prepared. It will happen again
So we have to be ready.

THE FRUITY PEBBLES by Thomas
Blue bowl-
Smooth cool plastic
On my kitchen table.
Cereal box full of the fruity pebbles,
jug of milk.
  I pour the cereal.
It sounds like packing a snowball,
Like paper getting crumpled up,
Like a rainbow to eat.

I splash the milk
In the blue bowl, white as snow.
Then I take my first
Bite and it is good.
It melts in my mouth
Like soggy paper but
It tastes like Skittles
                                        and gummy worms.

The Paper Boy by Jeffrey
Boy on a Red shiny bike.
Fast as a big polka dotted cheetah.
Moving faster and faster every minute.
His feet are a blur.

Smiling and laughing at the same time.
And selling newspapers in the neighborhood.

Feet peddling, arm throwing, paper flying
Slapping On the porch.
And off he goes to the next house.

THE NOISIEST MALL
by Adreanna
The mall is noisy-
I hear shoes click clacking
and gum smack smacking.
The kids are yelling, crying,

Asking their mom dad for ice cream
Falling on the floor and stomping their feet,
Whining so they can get what they want.

The mall is noisy-
People are looking for clothes.
I hear clothes hangers screeching and feeling fabric.
Workers talking on phones
And taking calls for their bosses.

The mall is noisy-
I can hear people say, “May I help you
or whose turn it is?”
I can hear people telling jokes and laughing;
Talking in their loud voices
So they can talk over the loud music.
All in the big noisy mall.

     MY BLASTED BOOTS by Alexis
 S
o much depends
Upon my pair of blasted boots;
Look like a shiny new car;
Black silk glitter.

All you hear is tap, tap, tap,
On the slippery floor
Like a tambourine
As soon as I prance out of my room.

So much depends
Upon my pair of blasted boots;
As high as my knee
With a tall stiletto spike
As skinny as a toothpick.
When I put them on
I almost fall down
Arms out like a tightrope walker,
Balancing, wobbling, grabbing onto
Anything I can.

So much depends
Upon my pair of blasted boots;
I wear them and
Feel beautiful,
Like a super model that just
Learned to strut down the runway
In her tall stiletto spikes.
That’s why I depend upon my
Pair of blasted boots.

 MRS. MORAN By Ricky
Mrs. Moran
looking happy and sitting at her
Computer desk
Her hands and her fingers
typing fast as a race car.

Swiveling back to her desk Reading workbooks
Following with her fingers
Concentrating on taking grades.

Turning back to her computer desk
Checking e-mails she is clicking the mouse
And typing back to the people who sent her a message
looking at the students seriously
as the students are working,
writing in journals,
reading their books and looking at their teacher.

Jungle Life by Montel
In
the jungle you would hear frogs
red spotted tree frogs
Splashing water,
ribbiting.

Creepy weeds hanging down on you,
closer.
Scary plants everywhere on the trees,
ground looking odd and ugly.

Land animals wild and vicious,
a tiger hiding in a black pit
with black and orange stripes
to jump out at you.
Tree animals: monkeys, tree frogs,
a cheetah hiding in the tree waiting
on you to come so he can jump down.

Hear the howling of the wind
Hear the yell of a man running from a python.
hear the crackle of rain, the rustle of animals in the trees,
leaves falling off.

So many wild and strange things in the jungle.

 Talon Falls by Travance
At scary Talon Falls
Ghosts hanging from trees
Look like dead old people.
Goblins peering behind the doors
Looking spooky, waiting to scare me
Screaming like a person
Getting sucked up by a Tornado!
Dead football Players
Chasing me with a
Chainsaw sounding like
A lawnmower booming from
The walls

Ghosts yelling out BOO!
Me and my friends
Wide mouths and eyes
Running, thinking they were
Going to kill me!
Witches laughing
HI HI HI
HA HA HA HA
At scary Talon Falls!

The Transformer! by Danesha
When you look at your
Mom you wonder what
She is thinking and then
She tells you and she say
to never mess with a pole
that has a transformer on
it and green and yellow stuff
coming from it because if you
touch it you will die or burn to death!!
