I think I can try to
Be a rock climber.
Climbing as high
As I can, slipping
Constantly, and
Constantly, I am
Sweating, taking
A deep breath. I
Took off climbing.
My knees shaking
The hornets hook
Slipping off. I’m
So scared, I almost
Scream like girl. Ahh!
I scream. It is just me,
The sun, and the tall
Hill. Woo! One of my
Hand slipping off. A
Piece of the red, hard
Rocks fell off. 6ft tall
Hill falling off, but then
I told myself, I think I can,
I think I can, then I took another
Deep breath, and went on climbing
As high as I can. Finally got up there,
And I said, wo hoo! I said with a scream.
And all it took is for me to believing in
Myself.

Can I? by Corvina
I can, I can
I know I can
if I can just believe myself.
I won’t be rejected about what
I know I can do!

I want to become a model.
Getting on the stage,
legs shaking, sweating
like I just got out the shower!
I was waiting to see if I’m eliminated.
My hair brown, long, silky
with red shiny lipstick on.
I did it!
I did it!

Dear Murray State Writing Teachers,
I want to tell you about one time when I was scared, even fearful to do something. Well, did I do it? Huh?! Read more and you will be able to find out.
One day I was at home and I picked up the phone. I was thinking I could call 911 and nobody would know. I was hotter than a fire cracker on the 4th of July, but I decided to call them. It was the police. My mom came in the house and the phone rang. I asked my mom if I could get that but she said no.
I thought to myself, I am in big trouble. The police asked who had done this. I admitted it was me. Well I know now don’t try something new you haven’t done if you’re not sure about it. If it is good then take a chance in life. If it is not good, or if you’re not sure then wait and see what your parents think about it first. Learn from my mistake!
Sincerely,
Chantelle, Mrs. Vickie Martin’s 5th Grade

Ja’Lynn
I think I can become a
superstar. People
looking at me while
I’m standing on the stage
dancing and singing. Everybody
is calling “Ja’lynn, Ja’lynn, I love you!’’
People thinking I am queen of pop.
Singing like I am a superstar.
I can become one only if I believe
and I hope I am one.
I say to myself I think I can, I think I can.
Wearing my best outfit thinking I am so cute.
People thinking I am looking cute,
looking beautiful with
everybody still yelling my name!

A Lesson Learned the Hard Way

Did You Do It? by Chantelle
Have you ever gotten told not to do something but you did it anyway? Well, I have. Let me tell you something that I did and the bad thing that happened. Read more and I will tell you my tale.

                                                                        Out One Sunny Morning
My mom and I were walking down the sidewalk with the dogs. She told me not to run because I did not have any fluid in my inhaler and she did not want me to suffocate. So what did I do? I ran. My chest started to hurt. I got weak inside my body. Next thing you know I…

                                                                          Big Shocking Moment
I had passed out before her eyes. My mom was scared. She rushed to call the ambulance. When we were at the hospital I thought about how I had disobeyed my mother. If I had not, I wouldn’t have gotten into this mess.

Come On, It’s a Long Journey
I learned a lot from what I did. I learned that if you obey your parents, you won’t get in trouble. They are looking out for you. I learned to not run if my mom tells me not to. I will pay attention to my mom. Kids, I am telling you to look, listen and learn from my mistake. Honor your father and mother or whoever takes care of you. Your life is a long journey and you need to be ready.

Mrs. Martin's Friends Write to Communicate Real Ideas for Real Reasons!

Dear Paige,
I hope you have a good year. I know it is your first year and all, but be better than your uncle Shy at school. Don’t be bad, please. Do what you’re supposed to do. I know some little people will be mean to you, but don’t be mean to other people please!
I know I may not be a good role model, but now I am trying to be responsible and a good role model so I can teach you, Paige. I know you can do it if you believe you can. Try it! Be good! You’ll be smarter and wiser and stronger. I will try to be good, too!
Sincerely,
Shy

                                                       New Stations by Corvina
                                                                  New Stations

Coach Mac, do you ever think of having new stations at McNabb in the gym for P.E? Well, I know maybe half of the school might want new stations because we have old stations that have been there for the past ten years. That’s why we need new stations! For an example maybe we can do dances, jump rope, scooter, or other nonlocomoter activities. Keep reading keep because I really have some pretty good ideas.

                                                        Exercise Stations
And don’t all people need exercise? Obviously, some of the McNabb student needs exercise. (I know I do!) We need exercise to help us get stronger. We need to build muscles. They might come in handy. We need exercise so we won’t get fat. Coach Mac’s word is   fattyfattybubalaty. It means some people don’t exercise enough and need to lose some weight; at least 15 pounds too heavy, that what he means by fattyfattybubalaty. These new stations can help us to motivates and inspire us to exercise!

                                                              Tennis
I love tennis, it my favorite sport. The main thing I like about it is the racquet and the ball. I can just swing the racquet to the left and to the right and hit the ball. That how much I love tennis. You can be active and run and you can do a little bit of exercise. Tennis can also help you learn to keep your hand straight.

A great thing about teaching us about tennis is how close we are to Noble Park also. If you notice we are within walking distance to Noble Park. We can walk during our P.E. time at school. Mrs. Withrow will even donate a whole set of racquets to the school.   This will also be good for kids who can get ready for the PMS/Tilghman team.

                                                               Baseball
Maybe we can play baseball and you can take one of the pieces of the clown equipment from the fall festival. Maybe we can practice throwing the ball into one of the eyes. Practicing how to throw with your hand will also help you learn how you use your hand and help you learn movement. Also in baseball you can develop good posture. Having posture will let you feel good about yourself. It helps you prevent problems with like bones, joints, and muscles; especially as you get older.

So now I have explained all my reason. I told why we need more stations to stay healthy and strong. We need some new exercise like tennis and other kind of sports. These new stations will help us stay a lot healthier. Coach Mac, I hope you take this seriously.

Sorry N’thayvion by Corvina
I apologize,
N’thayvion, for being
Ugly and mean;
My eyes were narrow
And I frowned
At you
Because I was focused,
Doing my work.

I was just
Ignoring you,
Begging for mercy,
Pleading for an A.R book,
Your puppy dog
Face saying
Please Corvina,
Please Corvina!!

I was so mad
Because you were like
a fly buzzing in
My ears, zzzzz!
I swatted you with
My hands and words,
“Move over your junk,
You bonehead!”

Your Expression
Was sad;
The corners of your mouth
Turned down like a willow tree
Dangling in the wind.

N’thayvion
I will try my best for
You and I to be friends
But I was being mean then.
I apologize!!

If I Were President by Nakitia

If I were president I would change the laws. I would change the laws by making littering a crime. I would also change the laws by making taxes lower so people have more money in their paychecks and more money for their rent. I would make it illegal to own more than three houses so more people could own their own home. Also, I would make everyone be nice to each other because being mean is not a good thing to do and no one should do it. That’s what I would do if I were president!

Dear Camron,
Hey! Long time, no see! Did you know that war is the most risky thing you can do? Well, it is. There are snipers, tanks, missiles, and soldiers out there, so don’t join in; stay away from the battlefields.
If you want to be in the army you need a “lot” of training. If you like artillery you will need a tank. If you like using a pistol, you will be a soldier. If you like snipers, you need to be a s-soldier. But when you get shot, you’re dead. The medic might come but don’t scream. The enemies may catch you, so don’t get shot!
“Always” be sure you have ammo and some binoculars or you’re caught. Don’t ever let the enemy see you. All you will hear are commanders yelling in your ear, the tanks rumbling the ground to the core, planes roaring and soaring in the sky.
You need to be fast, strong, and have stealth in the military. You need to respect your officers. Pick a good shelter to hide behind.
You have 3 choices: land, water or air. So far, you’ve learned about the land. Now I will teach you about water. You can ride in a submarine underwater or a battleship above. They both have good things about them. A submarine has missiles and a battleship has cannons, although they both sink, so choose wisely.
Now: air, kings of the sky. You have many choices in a plane. You have gunner, pilot, commander and bomber. I suggest the gunner for more action but this is you. Tough, isn’t it? Sooner or later, you’ll choose. But be careful. Don’t spin out of control or you will crash. Remember, war is risky!
Your friend,
Ryan

One Christmas by Chancie
One ordinary Christmas day I woke up and ran all over the house like a herd of buffalo. My sister woke up and said, “Keep it down, would you?!” and came in the living room then said, “Sorry.” I saw a huge tree standing in the middle of the floor decorated with lights and little metal balls dangling down with pine scent floating in the air and boxes underneath filled with goodies. I opened one of my presents and out jumped a puppy! I yelled at the top of my lungs, “A puppy! A real live puppy! It’s just what I wanted!” I was so happy I got the dog that I named her “Faith.”

Dear Montez, Tavion & Quoin,
How is it in 2nd grade? Is it hard or easy? Can it be fun or boring? 2nd grade was a tough year for me, too. I hated it! My teacher was Mrs. Hadfield, but now she’s in kindergarten.
Montez, I kind of know what you do since you are my brother. You get marks almost all of the time. That’s going to have to stop. I know you can do better. Your homework is important. If you need help, somebody will help you. Improve your homework and behavior, Montez.
Tavion, I barely know what you do. You might not get into as much trouble as Montez. You are my cousin. You can ask or tell me anything you want. You just live down the street from me. I can help you with any work. I know it can be hard for you sometimes, but I can’t give you answers. You can do good on your work and behavior. Be good and try hard.
Quoin, I barely know what you do, also. I know you have bad attitudes like me. We both have to fix that. Try to control it. Your work is very important. You have to use your brain. Do well on all your work.
I hope you understand what I wrote to all of you. Ya’ll can help each other on schoolwork. All of us do the same work. You do this work to pass 2nd grade and get you ready for 3rd grade. Every grade gets you ready for the next. Don’t you want an education? Don’t you want to go to college? School is important! That’s why you need to do good work and work hard to pass every grade.
Sincerely,
Treshon

Dear Dad,
How are you doing today? I know you have bought me everything in my life, but…can you buy me a laptop? The first reason why I want you to buy me a laptop is because always, even when I was little, I wanted you to buy me a laptop. You would always say, “I will think about it,” when I asked you. Then the next day I would ask you and you would say, “Wait until I have some money.”
Another reason I want a laptop is because I can do a lot of things with a laptop like my school work or anything else like that. And if you decide to buy me one I will thank you! So now you know what I want. I really love you! Hope you get me one. Thanks!
Love,
Ja’Lynn

Dear Jay Sean,
How are you doing? Your song that you you wrote featuring Lil Wayne was good. Down is my favorite song that you wrote. You got moves that I would like to do. I want to know the words to the song so I could sing it to my friends and keep the song stuck in my head. The first time I heard it at the beginning of the song, I thought it was Lil Wayne, but it was you. I am so glad I get to write this letter to one of my favorite singers.
Love,
Jacqlene

    Apology Poem by Austin
I am sorry that I hit you in the face because I was

just mad because you kept doing stuff

in my house so don’t touch stuff in my house.

And that is all I have to say is to

leave my stuff alone

I’m sorry for hitting you

in the face.

Dear Daddy,
Hey, daddy! I love you, but I wanted to ask you if you will let me go to the skating ring? I would love to see all my friends. I really think it would be a lot of fun. My best friend Essence’s mom will pick us up and bring me home. We will stop off at McDonald’s to eat. She said we won’t be home late.
Essence got a new pair of fast skates and there’s going to be a contest to see who can skate the best. If I try hard, I think I can win the contest, “Who’s Fastest?” I would also like to show off my new skates. Have you seen them? They are pink and red. Sometimes I fall down but I get right back up. Essence says that’s how I learn.

All my friends say I can skate really well. If you want you could come see me. I like to go in circles, but then I get dizzy. Some of my friends say skating is weird. I say, “What world are you in?!” They say, “Not in skating land!”

I really want to see my friends at the skating ring. I miss them. I want to see you skate, too. I want to see mamma and my sister skate. I love you! I want to go skating! I promise I will be safe!

Love,
Ardajaha

Dear Chris Brown,
How are you doing? Me? I am fine. I just wanted to talk to you and tell you it’s time to stop hitting on girls. When you hit on Rhianna, her face was not that good looking. So why did you hit her? Were you mad? Did you have a bad day? If the answer is yes to any of those questions, you should not have taken your anger out on her. She is a woman. People are going to start calling you a woman-beater. Do you want that to be your nick-name? I think not. Chris, we will talk more in the next paragraph about why you should not hit on ladies.
Back to what we were talking about. A reason why you should not hit a woman is because there is a chance you would go to jail, like you did. You paid your own self out, but if you could not sing you would probably still be sitting in a cell. That would not be good. You would eventually think and say, “Why would I hit a woman?” If I were you I would write a new song all about I am sorry for hitting you, Rhianna.
Mr. Brown, you might lose everything you’ve got, like money, houses, TV’s, your bed; everything Rhianna wants of yours can be hers. You might not like it, but I bet if you lost your life that would solve everything. You would go up to God and he would not be pleased with you and what you’ve done. I like you, but why did you hit her? We will have more time to talk later, Mr. Brown.
Sincerely,
Chantelle

                        Storm by N’Thayvion
So much depends on a blanket
Keeps me warm when I m cold
When the storm hit I was in pain
And I was frighten scared as
                           My dog when she covered
                            Her ears but with my
Blanket I was warm as ever

THE WINTER STORM by BY AUSTIN
I am a tree,
look at me.
I fell on a wire,
started a fire.
There is no more
left of me,
but you will
remember me as
THE TREE ON FIRE
ON THE WORST DAY EVER,
THE WINTER STORM of ’09!

The Fan by N’Thayvion
So much depends on
A fan,
White, the shape of a clock,
It stands on a floor.

So much depends on
A fan,
That you turn
On by a button,
Oscillating side to side;
I feel the breeze
As it goes by it
Feels so good and cool
Even just for a little
While.

So much depends on
A fan,
Used in the summer
Time
99 DEGREES OUTSIDE
Too hot to do anything
Except sitting in front of
The fan I can.

The Tree Apology by Rayshaun
I am sorry for falling on your house.
I just wanted to hang out.
I am always
getting shocked
when lighting strikes.
I wanted to stop
getting hurt
so I leaned up against your house.
I am getting old.
I think it’s
time for me to take a break.

I am still
sorry for falling on your house,
your red brick black rooftop house
with the
pieces crumbling off.
I felt sad when I
fell on your house, also when I knocked out
the power lines.
I am very sorry.

FOOTBALL by Daquan
FOOTBALL
is a rough game-
Running, tackling, crushing.
The main players are the Quarterback,
running back
tossing,
running the ball to
the right, left
Passing to the right
And dashing to the left.

At PTHS
the field is big
long, huge,
a rectangle shape
with a tornado symbol
in the middle

FOOTBALL
is a rough game-
Running, tackling, crushing.
10, 20, 30, 40, 50
Yard lines
Crowd screaming
it’s a touchdown
Yelling, loud, clapping
Cheering singing
We will, we will rock
Stomp you

Running, tackling, crushing.
